LiveEO Lands DLR Funding to Teach AI New Vision

Berlin-based Earth observation company LiveEO has landed a substantial grant from the German Space Agency at DLR, backed by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) as part of the National Programme for Space and Innovation.

According to the company's press release, the funding supports an 18-month feasibility study, aimed at building something the industry hasn't quite managed yet: a single AI model that understands satellite imagery in all its different forms. Right now, most Earth observation AI is trained narrowly. One model spots trees, another flags buildings, and a new model has to be built almost from scratch for every new task or data type. LiveEO wants to change that with a Vision Foundation Model, an approach that learns a broad understanding of how the Earth's surface looks and shifts over time, across many types of satellite data at once. The tricky part is combining optical imagery, which looks a lot like photos taken from space but needs daylight and clear skies, with radar (SAR) data, which sees through clouds day or night but is far harder to interpret.

LiveEO's study will test whether a single model can make sense of both together, spotting changes reliably even if one data source is missing or blocked. For infrastructure operators who rely on LiveEO to monitor power lines, railways, and pipelines, that could mean steadier, more weather-proof monitoring. The company says the project reflects a broader shift toward foundational AI built specifically for satellite data, rather than adapted from general computer vision tools.
