Berlin-based x-cardiac has a new name and a bigger mission. The company, known for AI tools that predict complications after heart surgery, is now called Ascléa, and it just closed a Series A funding round to match its broader ambitions, according to a press release from the company.

The round brought in fresh backers Quercus, a family office, and venture capital firm Catalpa Ventures, joining existing investors IBB Ventures and a group of business angels. The company said the new funds will go toward product development.

Where x-cardiac focused on heart surgery outcomes, Ascléa is widening its scope to AI for everyday hospital work. Its new platform, called Clé, lets hospitals run modern language models and agentic AI on their own terms, whether in their own data center or through European sovereign cloud providers. The idea is to plug existing clinical IT systems into Clé so hospital data becomes usable for AI applications.

CEO Oliver Höppner said the expertise built up over the years at x-cardiac is now being put to broader use, calling Clé an important first milestone with more to follow. Chief Medical Officer Prof. Dr. Alexander Meyer added that AI can help hospitals hold on to their capacity by taking over tasks that tie up staff without adding to direct patient care.

Ascléa is a spin-off from the German Heart Center at Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin. It already has two CE-certified AI medical products on the market, and the fresh funding is meant to speed up what comes next.
