25-Year-Old Berliner Becomes Youngest US Bank CEO

Berlin-founded fintech Augustus, which is building what it calls the Global Dollar Bank, has announced a $180 million Series B funding round at a $1 billion valuation, according to the company's press release. The round was led by Tiger Global, with participation from Hummingbird, QED, existing investors, and the founders of Nubank, Ramp, Circle and Deel.

The news comes shortly after Augustus received preliminary approval for a full national banking license from the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC), positioning the company as what it describes as the world's first clearing bank built for the AI era. Augustus focuses on transactions between banks and financial institutions worldwide rather than everyday consumer banking, aiming to replace decades-old settlement systems like SWIFT and CHIPS with real-time, round-the-clock, programmable infrastructure built on stablecoins and AI.

"We started Augustus with a simple thesis: the Dollar is the greatest product in the world but its distribution is fundamentally broken," said Ferdinand Dabitz, CEO and co-founder of Augustus. "This financing lets us execute on our mission to provide high-quality dollar access to international fintechs and banks. It's time to dollarize the world."

Founded in 2021 by Dabitz along with Simon Wimmer, Joshua Becker and Peter Lieck, Augustus is set up as a global business with offices in New York, Dallas, Berlin and Helsinki. The company already handles euro clearing for global clients including crypto exchange Kraken, with billions of dollars in transactions processed over the past year. Dabitz, 25, is reportedly the youngest bank CEO in recent US banking history.

With fresh capital and a banking license in hand, Augustus is positioning itself to expand its role in a payments landscape where China's CIPS network and the planned BRICS Pay system are both growing fast.
