JD.com, one of China's biggest e-commerce and logistics players, has leased over 41,000 square meters of warehouse space just south of Berlin. And if you think this is just a real estate deal, think again.
The site in Ludwigsfelde, located about 35 minutes from central Berlin with direct access to the A10 ring motorway, is one of the largest logistics deals the region has seen in years. According to a report by eurotransport.de, the move is part of a much broader European expansion strategy.
What makes JD.com different from many other platforms is its insistence on owning its logistics chain end-to-end. Rather than relying on third-party providers, the company operates its own warehouses, delivery services, and technology infrastructure. In Europe, that means Joybuy as its consumer-facing e-commerce platform, and JoyExpress as its last-mile delivery arm, already active in Germany, France, and the UK, offering same-day and next-day delivery in major cities.
Brandenburg fits this strategy perfectly. The region offers excellent connectivity to German and European transport corridors, a growing consumer base in Berlin, and room to scale. For JD.com, Ludwigsfelde is not just a storage facility. It is an entry point into the German market and potentially a distribution hub for broader European operations.
For the German logistics industry, the message is clear: a well-funded competitor with deep operational experience is setting up shop and playing for keeps.
