Greener Grids: Berlin's Nuventura Acquired by Lucy Group

SF₆-based switchgear carries a hidden but significant carbon footprint, driven by the extreme global warming potential of the gas itself. Even small leakage rates translate into tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions over an asset’s lifetime. © Nuventura

Berlin-based Nuventura is joining Lucy Electric after parent company Lucy Group completed a full acquisition of its shares — a move set to fast-track the global rollout of SF₆-free switchgear technology.

According to the company's press release, Nuventura has been developing sustainable alternatives to SF₆-based switchgear since its founding in 2017. The startup built its reputation by introducing the world's first 36 kV dry-air Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS), followed by a 24 kV version — both designed to cut out one of the most potent greenhouse gases used in power infrastructure, without sacrificing performance or reliability.

The timing couldn't be better. EU F-gas regulations are banning SF₆ in new medium-voltage switchgear from 2026 for applications up to 24 kV, with higher voltages following by 2030. That's creating a wave of demand for proven, compliant alternatives across Europe and globally.

By joining Lucy Electric, Nuventura gains manufacturing capacity, an established global customer base, and the industrial scale needed to grow fast. Lucy Electric CEO John Griffiths called the deal a gateway into the primary switchgear space, noting it directly supports the shift to lower-carbon power networks.

Nuventura Managing Director Manjunath Ramesh described the acquisition as "the next chapter" in the company's growth, pointing to a fundamental technology shift underway in the switchgear market.

The combined operation will target utilities, renewable energy projects, and industrial users worldwide — aligned with the energy sector's push toward decentralization, decarbonization, and digitalization.
