Berlin's Restate secures $20M for backend platform

Berlin-based startup Restate has raised $20 million in Series A funding to expand its Durable Execution platform and bring the technology into the mainstream of backend development. According to a company press release, the round was led by Singular with participation from Redpoint Ventures and Capital One Ventures.

Founded by the team behind Apache Flink, Restate aims to solve a challenge that many developers face when building modern backend systems. As applications become more distributed and increasingly rely on AI agents, developers must manage state, failures, retries and long running processes across multiple services.

Restate's answer is Durable Execution, a technology that allows developers to write application logic while the runtime handles recovery, progress tracking and reliability. The company argues that existing Durable Execution systems are often too expensive, too slow and too complex to operate at scale.

Restate wants to move beyond traditional workflow engines and make durability a core building block across entire backend architectures. The platform includes features such as Durable Functions, Virtual Objects and Virtual Queues, which can be used for applications ranging from AI agents and session management to enterprise workflows.

The company says customers are already using the platform in a variety of environments. These include AI coding platform Replit, enterprise software provider DOSS and a Fortune 500 bank running financial workflows with multi region consistency requirements.

With the new funding, Restate plans to continue developing its technology and pursue its long term goal of making durability, state management, communication and coordination fundamental programming primitives for modern distributed applications.
