Berlin-based startup Nanolope just landed €800,000 in pre-seed funding, and investors are betting on an unusual idea: turning your walls and ceilings into a giant thermal battery.
According to a press release from IBB Ventures, the round was backed by IBB Ventures through its Pre Seed Fund B#, along with several business angels and industry experts from the energy, real estate, and materials tech sectors. The money will go toward scaling up production, launching pilot projects, and growing the team.
So what does Nanolope actually make? Ceiling panels that turn walls, ceilings, and floors into passive thermal storage systems. The idea: store heat and cold right inside the structure of a building, leading to a more stable indoor climate, lower heating and cooling demand, and reduced CO2 emissions.
That matters in a city like Berlin, where buildings are among the biggest energy consumers. Retrofitting old properties is often slow and expensive, so Nanolope's pitch to housing companies, hotels, offices, and cafés is simple: install the panels without tearing the building apart.
"The transition to sustainable heating will be decided in existing buildings," says Dr. Felix Marske, Nanolope's CEO and co-founder, in the press release. He adds that the long-term goal is for buildings themselves to double as thermal energy storage, making renewable energy use more efficient.
Sabine Wolff of IBB Ventures says the founding team's expertise and its patented technology convinced investors it could set new standards in construction.
Founded in 2025, Nanolope develops its materials without rare earth elements, and most of it can be recycled.
