A Berlin-based startup just made history. Bliq.ai has received approval to operate fully driverless vehicles on public roads in Estonia, marking the first authorization of its kind in an EU member state. According to the company's press release, the green light enables fully driverless road operations under remote human supervision, with no safety driver in the seat.

Bliq currently runs a dozen vehicles in Tallinn and says it operates what it believes to be the largest completely driverless fleet in Europe. The approval followed an extensive validation process, including test-track sessions and real-world testing in city traffic.

What sets Bliq apart is its retrofit approach. Rather than building purpose-made autonomous vehicles from scratch, the startup upgrades existing software-defined cars with its own sensor and compute stack. The system combines AI-based Level 2 driving with remote human oversight, making deployment faster and more scalable.

"Europe has now crossed a major threshold for driverless mobility," said CEO and Co-Founder Julian Glaab. "Our goal is to bring this technology to consumers and businesses across the continent as quickly and safely as possible."

The Estonian milestone is just the beginning. Bliq is actively pursuing regulatory approval in several other EU countries, with Germany as an important next market. That puts Berlin, where the company is headquartered, right at the center of the action.

CTO Torgen Hauschild highlighted the broader vision: making autonomous mobility available in the vehicles people and businesses already use every day, not just in dedicated robotaxi fleets. Bliq is backed by investors including NEA and Atlantic.
