Berlin Gets Germany's New AI Safety Institute

Berlin has a new addition to its tech scene, and this one comes straight from the federal government. AISI Deutschland, the country's new AI Safety and Security Institute, has officially opened its doors in the capital, according to information released by the German federal government.

The institute was set up jointly by the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and State Modernisation (BMDS) and the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI), following a decision by the National Security Council back in June 2026. Its job: keep pace with the rapid development of AI and work out, quickly and with real technical depth, what these systems can actually do and what risks they carry.

In this first phase, the institute is built around two existing federal agencies. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is handling the cybersecurity side, while the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) covers safety more broadly. Together they are taking a close look at leading AI models, especially their capabilities around cyber risks and, increasingly, concerns about loss of control over powerful systems.

Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger says Germany needs an institute able to move as fast as the technology itself. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stresses that AI has to stay controllable even as the country works to keep pace with its rapid progress.

AISI Deutschland is not a regulator. It is described as a think and do tank, already exchanging notes with counterparts in France, the UK and the EU AI Office, and aiming to help shape shared international standards for handling advanced AI safely.

For Berlin, it is another sign that the city is becoming a serious hub for AI policy and security work, not just startups.
