Kalz Scales Up CO2 Capture With IBB Ventures Backing

Berlin climate-tech company Kalz is taking its CO₂-to-building-material process to industrial scale. According to the company's press release, an investment from IBB Ventures will help build one of Europe's largest CO₂ mineralization plants right here in Berlin, with production due to start later this year.

The idea is fairly simple to explain: take CO₂-rich exhaust gas from industry, mix it with mineral leftovers such as slag or waste-incineration ash, and let a chemical reaction lock the CO₂ away as solid carbonate. The result is a stable, carbonated material that can replace some of the most emission-heavy ingredients in cement and concrete. Two problems solved at once, the CO₂ stays out of the atmosphere for good, and the construction industry gets a lower-emission alternative to work with.

Kalz isn't starting from zero. The underlying process was scientifically validated at TU Berlin as part of the "Seq-Kalz" project, backed by €1.3 million in public funding from the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. With IBB Ventures now on board through its B# pre-seed programme, founders Till Strunge, Dario Kremer and Jason Collis are pushing the technology toward industrial-scale production.

CEO Till Strunge says the process captures CO₂ permanently while producing building materials the construction industry can use right away. IBB Ventures' Stephan Schulze calls the business model robust and adaptable, pointing to value created from CO₂ storage, upgraded industrial residues and the global building-materials market all at once.

Kalz has already picked up recognition beyond Berlin, including a place on the Falling Walls Foundation's "Top 100 Science Start-ups to Watch" for 2026.
